The best carbs for your hormones

Low carb diets have been all the rage in the last 5+ years. Many people have lost weight on these diets but many people find eliminating Carbs extremely difficult. I’ve done it myself and while I’ve lost weight doing so, again, I found it was not sustainable.

You’ll be happy to know that in my research, I’ve found eliminating Carbs is not exactly hormone friendly and can cause symptoms of hypothyroidism. There are some people who do very well by eliminating Carbs so you should do your own research by eliminating them for a period of time, then reintroducing them slowly. For now, a few simple ways to know you need more Carbs is if you

  • Tire easily
  • Are always cold
  • Have a stressful life
  • Are not sleeping well
  • Have trouble losing weight

As far as science tells us now, Carbs can help the body regulate it’s hormone levels. I’m sure you find that very good news. As I said above, learn what’s best for you. There are better Carbs than others however so in this post, I will share with you the Best Carbs for Your Hormones.

Good Carbs

Sweet, starchy veggies like beets, squash, potatoes, sweet potatoes, yams, batata, cassava, and taro, and fruits. Some people can tolerate quinoa and rice. I cannot so if I’m focused on feeling well and energetic and if I’ve not overindulged in a while, I’ll have a cup of rice which is my favorite. I usually pay for it with an upset belly so I’m sure there will come a day when I just don’t have it.

I recommend having Carbs 2-3 times per week on consecutive days so you have 5 solid days being Carb free, and about 100 grams on those days to stay Hormone Friendly.

Bad Carbs

Breads, cereals, pastas, pastries, and other processed foods are anti-hormones causing blood sugar to spike, inflammation, and just overall poor quality, quick burning fuel for your body. These Carbs on a regular basis will keep your body in sugar burning mode rather than fat burning mode. These should not be eaten in moderation or at all if you suffer from hormone imbalance.

As always, Strength & Love,
