The Skinny On Your Skinny Girl™ Margarita
This blog post is formerly known as Keeping The Happy In Happy Hour but all my girls came in to the studio today in a giddy, hung over buzz about their SkinnyGirl™ Party.
The girls had attended a SkinnyGirl™ Margarita Party the night before. Im not a big TV watcher, so they had to educate me about Bethanny Frankel, a Reality TV star & Natural Foods Chef and inventor of SkinnyGirl™ products. Oh, and she’s really skinny. I recall a People’s magazine cover with Bethanny’s incredibly skeletal physique claiming that she had been obsessed with being skinny. I thought that was an understatement but she claims to be over it.
So why is the Skinny Girl™ Margarita a “margarita you can trust”?
Here is what I know:
The pre-mixed SkinnyGirl™Margarita claims to have 100 calories per 4 oz. of mixture and boasts that it’s 400 calories less than a Traditional Margarita. Let’s see:
Skinny Girl™ Margarita
- 2 ounces of Premium Blue Agave Tequila (129 calories/2 oz.)
- Lightly sweetened with Agave Nectar (16 calories/teaspoon)
- Triple Sec (188 calories/1.5 oz.)
- Lime juice (3 calories/1 oz.)
TOTAL: 336…….Whah?
Traditional Margarita Recipe
- 2 oz White Tequila (129 calories)
- 1 oz Cointreau (95 calories)
- 1 oz Lime Juice (3 calories)
- ½ tsp Fructose (8 calories)
TOTAL: 235
Jose Cuervo Margarita Mix
- 4 oz mixer (100 cal)
- 1 shot of cheap Tequilla (1.5 oz or 104 cal)
- touch of Grand Marnier (25 cal)
TOTAL: 229
What 500 calorie Margarita’s is she talking about!? My guess is there are plenty of liberties taken with dyes and sweeteners and other ingredients that are easily added and difficult to pin point. What is not difficult to pin point is how many calories are in alcohol and its affect on being Skinny.

Here is what else I know:
Bethanny claims she only uses “natural” ingredients. She pays tribute well to the current marketing trend of Agave Nectar. Agave syrup has the highest fructose content of any commercial sweetener. Agave Nectar is FRUCTOSE. It does not go directly from plant to the bottle. It is highly processed and unlike the fructose found in fruit, processed fructose is highly addictive. Agave is, for all intents and purposes, highly concentrated sugar. As reported by Dr. Ingrid Kohlstadt, a fellow of the American College of Nutrition and an associate faculty member at Johns Hopkins School of Public Health: “Agave is almost all fructose, a highly processed sugar with great marketing. <More About Agave Nectar Here>
Bethanny also claims that the SkinnyGirl™ Margarita minimizes the hangover because it has only Premium Silver Tequila. Who wouldn’t want that? Actually it’s not the color of the alcohol that creates a hangover. The majority of a hangover is caused by acetaldeyde, alcohol’s poison. Maybe she’s hoping the suggestion will be enough to help.
And I also know:
Ms. Frankel is a very rich lady. She is reported to have sold SkinnyGirl™ Cocktails for $120 million dollars. Although she said it was “a very difficult decision” to sell Skinnygirl, but ultimately she “wanted big muscle [behind it] and I wanted it now.” Part of the appeal of the brand, according to Fortune Inc., is that it can help the company attract more female consumers. One of the next cocktails under the SkinnyGirl™ brand will be a white sangria.
So are we going to get Skinny by drinking Low Cal Cocktails? I dunno…did we get Skinny drinking Lite Beer? How about Fat Free Foods?
It is certain, however that Skinny is big business and I applaud Bethanny for her marketing skills. My advice: Stick to your mamas recipes and avoid the marketing junk. As always, I would love your thoughts, comments, and “Like’s” down below. If you’ve tried the SkinnyGirl Margarita and have an opinion, let me know.
